Every natural diamond on these pages followed the same impossible route. This is the journey you are wearing.

1. 150–200 km down I

   Carbon under a continent

   Formed in the mantle beneath ancient cratons, at pressures around 50,000 atmospheres and temperatures over 1,000 °C. Most natural diamonds are between one and three billion years old.

2. The violent lift II

   The kimberlite eruption

   A volcanic pipe fires the stones toward the surface fast enough that they survive the trip. No eruption, no diamond. South Africa’s kimberlites named the rock itself, after Kimberley.

3. Surface, found III

   Recovered and sorted

   Mined from the pipe or the rivers and beaches it fed, then sorted and graded. Provenance starts here, and South African goods carry some of the oldest mining paper trails on earth.

4. The cutter’s bench IV

   Cut for light

   A cutter spends the stone’s weight to buy its brilliance. This is the only step a human controls, and it is why I keep writing that cut quality is the C worth paying for.

5. Year zero V

   Worn, kept, passed on

   A certificate ties the stone to its grades, and the stone outlives every owner it meets. Deep time is the difference you cannot manufacture, and it is the whole reason this site exists.
