Short answer: buy the pear at a manufacturer, cutting house or dealer, and tilt it in daylight before you commit.
- Cheaper. A retail counter buys its pears at that same level and then applies keystone, roughly doubling the price, with a branded showroom at about three times. It is the same stone, one step earlier.
- Better. GIA gives a fancy shape no overall cut grade until the 2027 change lands, so the bow-tie, the symmetry and the point are yours to judge by eye, and the pool you judge from is about five times richer a step up: 52 percent of trade-access stock was D to G colour with VS2 clarity or better, against 9 percent of retail-held stock.
- They build the ring too. Most dealers, manufacturers and cutting houses either run a bench or work with one, so the mount is drawn around your pear with the V-tip over the point, and the same bench re-tips and resizes it years later.
Go to a showroom instead if the date is close, if you want to try finished pears on a hand this afternoon, or if the brand and the box are part of what you want.
When a cutter first picks up a pear at the bench, the eye does not go to the carat weight or the certificate. It goes straight down the centre of the body, hunting for the bow-tie shadow, then traces the point and reads whether the two shoulders mirror each other cleanly. That single sweep, bow-tie, point, symmetry, tells an experienced eye more about a pear shaped diamond ring in South Africa than any line on the GIA report, because GIA currently gives a fancy shape no overall cut grade. That is due to change: GIA confirmed on 14 June 2026 that it will introduce cut grades for marquise, oval and pear in 2027, so a pear bought today is being judged on the last of the ungraded reports. On a round brilliant the lab already hands you a cut grade that does most of the judging for you. On a pear shaped diamond ring in South Africa, that judgement falls entirely on you, and it is the single reason most people buy the wrong pear.
So before anything else, here is the order that actually matters when you assess a pear: bow-tie, then symmetry, then length-to-width ratio, then the point, then colour and clarity. Carat weight comes last, not first.
The bow-tie is the thing nobody tells you about
Run your eye across the width of almost any pear, oval or marquise and you will see a faint dark shape, like a bow-tie laid across the centre. That is light leaking out of the bottom of the stone instead of bouncing back to your eye. Every pear has some. The question is only how much.
A soft bow-tie that comes and goes as you tilt the stone is completely normal and does nothing to the beauty. A hard, black, fixed band across the middle is a dead zone, and no setting, photo or sales pitch fixes it. Here is the part that costs people money: the bow-tie does not appear on the GIA report at all. The certificate can read perfect, GIA Excellent polish and symmetry, and the stone can still have an ugly bow-tie. You can only catch it on a video shot in normal daylight, or in your own hand. This is exactly why I never let anyone buy a fancy shape from the report alone, and why it matters who is on the other side of the counter: with most online sellers you are buying from a reseller moving the pear along, not from anyone who has held it. What you want instead is somebody who will put the stone in your hand, in ordinary daylight, and leave you alone with it long enough to tilt it until that shadow either moves or does not.
Length-to-width: decide your shape before you shop
The length-to-width ratio is the stone’s profile, and it is personal. Measure the length, divide by the width, and you get a number. Most engagement-ring buyers land between 1.45 and 1.55. Go below 1.40 and the pear starts to look chubby and almost round. Push past 1.70 and it reads long and slender, elegant on a longer finger but not to everyone’s taste.
There is no right ratio, only yours. The mistake is shopping without choosing one, because the ratio decides which stones are even worth viewing. A buyer who knows they want 1.50 can ignore half the market on sight. Decide first, then look.
Symmetry and the point that chips
A pear has one job that an oval does not: it has to be symmetrical down its long axis. Lay an imaginary line from the tip to the rounded base and the two sides should mirror each other. A shoulder that bulges higher on one side, a belly fatter on the left, a tip that leans off centre. All of those are easy to see once you know to look, and all of them are common in cheaper pears because the cutter chased weight over shape.
Then there is the point. It is the most fragile spot on any diamond you can buy, and on a pear it sits right where your hand meets the world. It must be protected. A V-tip claw that wraps the point, or a prong that sits directly over it, is not optional. I have seen beautiful stones set in a way that left the tip exposed, and a knock on a door frame did the rest. This is a setting conversation, so have it before the ring is built, not after.
Have it with whoever is selling you the stone, too, rather than assuming it belongs to a shop. Most dealers, manufacturers and cutting houses either run a bench or work with one and take commissions, so the mount can be drawn around that particular pear: the V-tip placed where that stone’s point actually sits, the shoulders cut to its own outline. A pear pushed into a mount that already existed is the version where the tip ends up half covered. The same bench re-tips a claw years later if the point takes a knock, which on this shape is worth knowing before you decide where to buy.
What a pear actually costs in 2026
A pear is priced off the same colour and clarity logic as a round, so anchor yourself on the round market and adjust from there. The anchor worth using is the one you can check. Rapaport’s round list of 20 March 2026 puts G colour, VS1 clarity in the 1.00 to 1.49 carat bracket at $5,400 per carat, and the list is an asking price that the trade sells beneath. Knock 10 to 30 percent off, convert at R16.50 to the dollar and add 15 percent VAT, and a loose one carat round G VS1 lands at roughly R72,000 to R92,000, with about R82,000 sitting in the middle at 20 percent off list. Redo it yourself when the rate moves, because the rate moves every figure with it.
Against that, what a shop charges. In July 2026 I logged 73 one carat listings across 18 sellers, 17 of them South African, and 71 of the rows carried a price. Finished one carat rings at premium showrooms ran R105,000 to R428,000. Read that band carefully: it is a ring with a setting inside the price, and it rests on three listings of three different specifications rather than one stone priced three ways, so it describes what a showroom charges for “a one carat ring” and not a like-for-like comparison against a bare stone.
The pear’s own advantage is spread of a different kind. Because it faces up roughly 8 to 12 percent larger than a round of the same weight, you can drop a touch in carat, hold your colour and clarity, and still read as a bigger stone. That saving is real, and on a fancy shape the place to spend it is the make, not more weight.
Part of the distance between those two figures is the setting and the making, which are real work and have to be paid for. The rest of it is a published trade convention rather than anything I discovered. The retail convention is keystone: the counter price is roughly double what the stone cost the counter, and a branded showroom goes to roughly three times. Between one level of the trade and the next the margins are thin, commonly 3 to 5 percent a hop. So a pear that looks cheap on a ticket is very seldom a cheaper version of the pear you wanted.
That matters more on a fancy shape than on a round, and the reason is what is physically in the case. In June 2026 we listed 230 GIA-certified natural diamonds across six South African sellers, and split them by whether the stone sat on a South African shelf or was reachable through trade access. Of the trade-access stones, 52 percent were D to G colour with VS2 clarity or better. Of the retail-held South African stock, 9 percent were. That is a comparison of what is stocked, not of price, and the pear buyer feels it directly: GIA gives a fancy shape no overall cut grade until the 2027 change lands, so on a stone bought now you are judging the make with your own eye, and starting from a shallow pool of colour and clarity makes a good pear harder to find, not cheaper.
Then there is the question of whether the stone exists yet. A seller who sources on demand pulls the pear out of a global catalogue only after you have ordered, so payment clears before it is ever in front of you. On a shape where the bow-tie can hide at the wrong video angle, committing to a pear you have never tilted in your own hand is the riskiest way to buy one. One caution before you shop on price alone. A lab-grown pear costs a small fraction of a natural one, and if the ring is meant to be worn and enjoyed rather than kept, that is a fair trade. Do not buy it as an heirloom, though. Published wholesale tracking puts the lab-grown price fall at somewhere between 70 and 96 percent depending on the base year chosen and the size measured, and although the decline has slowed it has not turned around. Published estimates of resale sit at somewhere between 10 and 40 percent, on estimates that disagree sharply with each other, of what was paid, in a market thin enough that several large retail groups decline lab-grown stones on trade-in altogether. Lovely for a ring bought for now. Wrong for a ring you want to still mean something in twenty years.
Where I would buy
For a pear, being able to hold the stone in daylight before you commit is worth more than a small saving on a sticker, because the bow-tie and the point are things you have to see rather than read off a certificate. So I would rather buy a pear that is already cut and sitting in a safe than one ordered in after the payment clears. That points at the cutting and manufacturing end of the trade, where the stone is in the building and the person handing it to you knows how it was made.
The honest cost of that route is time. A pear chosen loose and then mounted is made to order, so it runs in weeks rather than an afternoon, and until the ring exists you are judging a stone and a drawing. A showroom sells the opposite: finished pears in the case now, a dozen of them on a hand today, one going home with you, no appointment needed. If the date is close enough for that to settle it, buy the finished ring, and still ask to see the stone in daylight first.
Finding that end is easier than it sounds, and the trick is to stop searching for a dealer or a wholesaler. Search the price question instead. A seller working near the trade tends to publish a per-carat number in rands, so a search on 1 carat diamond price, or diamond price per carat South Africa, surfaces the ones that put a figure in public and skips the ones that only offer a contact form. Then ask to see a pear in the flesh and tilt it in daylight to read the bow-tie before you decide. Everything else worth asking on the day sits in the diamond buying checklist, and on this shape three items carry more weight than the rest. Is the V-tip or the protective prong over the point quoted inside the setting price or as an extra afterwards. Will the report number be handed to you before payment so you can check it yourself, rather than shown to you on somebody’s screen. And do the stone and the mount arrive as two figures or as one. Put those to two sellers on the same afternoon and whose name is above the door stops being the interesting question.
