Natural vs lab grown diamonds South Africa. The short answer
Short answer: lab grown for a piece to be worn where resale genuinely does not matter. Natural for an engagement ring, an heirloom or anything you might one day sell, bought from a manufacturer, cutting house or dealer.
- Both are real diamond, chemically and optically. This was never a question of which one is genuine. It is price today against value tomorrow.
- Cheaper on the natural side. A retailer buys its certified stones at exactly trade level and then roughly doubles the price, about three times at a branded showroom, while the steps between one trade level and the next run at 3 to 5 percent. Buying before that hop is the one part of a natural-stone invoice you control.
- Better. The specification worth owning long term is about five times more common one step up the chain, 52 percent of trade-access stock against 9 percent of retail-held stock.
- They do the rest too. Setting, bespoke commissions, resizing, re-tipping, insurance valuations, repairs and buy-back, usually on their own bench, and on a stone you may one day trade up, buy-back at that level is on better terms than a counter can offer, because they are buying at the level they sell at.
Retail earns the sale when the date will not move, when finished pieces on a hand settle it, or when the brand matters. Those are good reasons and a showroom serves them properly.
Here is the gap in rands, as far as I am willing to state it, and derived rather than borrowed. Rapaport’s round brilliant list dated 20 March 2026 puts G/VS1 in the 1.00 to 1.49 carat bracket at $5,400 per carat. That list is an asking price, so a discount has to be assumed, and at 10 to 30 percent off it, R16.50 to the dollar and 15 percent VAT, a loose natural one carat of good specification estimates to roughly R72,000 to R92,000 including VAT, with about R82,000 in the middle. A lab grown stone that reads the same size on a hand costs a small fraction of that. I am deliberately not printing one rand figure for the lab stone, because the wholesale series it comes off has fallen every quarter for years, and any number I set down here is out of date by the time you read it. Ask for a figure dated to the month you are buying in. Buying the natural stone as a finished ring at a South African showroom counter widens the distance further still, partly because a setting is now included in the price and partly because that is where the counter markup lands.
So why would anyone pay it? Because the cheap number comes with a catch the showroom rarely mentions. Lab grown is manufactured supply, and its price has collapsed. Published wholesale tracking puts the fall somewhere between 70 and 96 percent, depending on which year you measure from and which size you look at, and although the rate of decline has slowed it has not reversed. That flows straight into what the stone is worth secondhand, and the honest answer there is a fraction of what you paid, in a thin market with few buyers.
That catch is the whole decision, and the numbers behind it are below.
The real price gap, in bands rather than in single stones
I publish bands, not individual stones with rand figures attached. One stone and its price is one seller’s window on one day, and quoting it as though it were the market is how diamond writing goes wrong. In July 2026 I priced 73 rows, 71 of them carrying a price, across 18 sellers, 17 of them South African and one an international online retailer, from premium showrooms through mall chains to online sellers. Set that beside the published price list and the comparison that matters for this decision, at one carat, looks like this.

The middle row is arithmetic on a published asking list plus an assumed discount, not a measurement, which is exactly why it is worth publishing: you can redo it. The bottom row is observed, but it rests on three showroom listings of three different specifications and it has a setting inside the price, so it is not the same object as the row above and the difference between them is not a saving.
Two things to take from that. First, look at where the width of the middle row comes from. The colour grade is fixed, the clarity grade is fixed and the list price is published, so the entire spread is a single unknown: the discount at which a stone of that specification actually changes hands. Push the colour and clarity higher and the whole thing lifts, which is why specification does far more to a natural diamond’s price than weight does. A cheap one carat headline, natural or lab, is nearly always a downgraded stone rather than a bargain.
Second, the lab grown stone sits at a small fraction of that middle band and is still drifting down, and I am not going to pretend that gap away. It is the honest case for lab grown, and for plenty of buyers it is decisive.
The honest case against lab-grown: the price collapse
Now the other side, with the same honesty.
Lab-grown diamonds are manufactured supply, and manufactured supply behaves the way manufacturing does. As capacity expanded the price fell hard. Wholesale price tracking published in the trade press puts the drop at as much as 96 percent measured from a 2018 base, while series measuring from 2020 put it nearer 70 percent, so the honest statement is a range and not a headline number. The rate of decline has slowed since 2024, and one or two categories firmed in the most recent quarter, but over any multi-year horizon the direction has been down. A stone bought a few years ago can be matched by a visually identical new one for a fraction of what it cost then.
That feeds directly into resale, and here I have to correct something this site used to say. Resale is not zero, and I was wrong to imply it was. Published estimates put it at somewhere between 10 and 40 percent, on estimates that disagree sharply with each other, of what was paid, with the lower end applying to stones bought before the steepest part of the fall. What is true is that the market is thin. Several of the largest retail trade-in and upgrade programmes exclude lab-grown stones outright, and most of the established firms that buy diamonds back from the public deal only in natural. So the practical position is not that your stone is worthless. It is that finding anyone willing to quote on it is the hard part, and the quote, when it comes, is a fraction of the invoice.
A natural diamond is not immune to depreciation. Buy one at inflated mall retail and you will still take a hit on resale. The difference is that a natural stone bought at a sensible price has a deeper secondary market, more firms willing to bid on it, and a usable upgrade path. That is the whole argument, and it rests on how easily the stone can be sold on, not on sparkle or sentiment.
Where each one actually makes sense
I am not anti lab-grown. I am anti being misled about it. Here is how I would actually decide.
Lab-grown is the smart choice when the piece is bought to be worn and resale genuinely does not matter to you. Bigger look for less money, a fun cocktail ring, a pair of everyday studs, a gift where the recipient wants size and sparkle on a budget. If you would never sell it and never trade it in, the falling price is irrelevant to you and the saving is real. Natural is the choice I lean to when the diamond carries weight beyond its sparkle. Engagement rings, heirloom-tier jewellery, a stone you plan to upgrade later, anything you might one day sell, reset, or pass down. For those, the resale gap and the upgrade path are the decision, and a smaller, well-cut natural GIA stone beats a larger lab-grown one in my view.
The trap to avoid sits between the two. It is buying lab-grown while being sold natural-diamond logic: investment talk, scarcity talk, strong resale, easy trade-in. None of that survives contact with the published figures. If a salesperson reaches for that language on a lab stone, the honest version of the pitch has gone missing, and the correction is simple. Ask them to put the trade-in terms for that exact stone in writing.
How most diamonds are really sold in South Africa, and why it matters here
There is a layer to this comparison that almost no one explains, and it changes how you read every price you are quoted. It is not whether the seller holds the stone today, because ordering one in to your specification is ordinary trade and often the only way to get exactly what you asked for. It is what you can verify before you pay, and who has actually looked at the diamond. That applies to natural and lab-grown alike.
What I could measure is not what each route charges, it is what each pool contains. The June 2026 count covered 230 GIA-certified natural diamonds offered by six South African sellers, grouped by grade rather than by price, with premium specification set at D to G colour and VS2 clarity or better.

Read that second column twice. The bar is generous, since it lets in G colour and VS2, grades most buyers would happily wear. Nine percent of retail-held stock cleared it. That is the honest explanation for a cheap natural one carat: it is not the same diamond at a kinder price, it is a lower colour or clarity stone, which is the lab-grown sticker lesson wearing different clothes.
What that count cannot tell you is which route is cheaper per carat, and I will not dress it up as though it could. The two pools are not priced on a comparable basis. For price, use the bands above, plus the trade’s own convention that explains the distance between them: keystone at the counter, roughly double the trade cost, about three times at a branded name, while margins between one trade level and the next run only around 3 to 5 percent.
Then there is inspection, which decides more of these purchases than price does. Ordering a stone in on your specification is ordinary trade and frequently the only way to get exactly what you asked for. Nobody looking at it is the part to refuse. If the diamond reaches you unexamined by anyone and unseen by you until after payment, your entire protection is the report plus your own inspection on delivery. That is true of a natural stone, and just as true of the far cheaper lab-grown one you also never held.
Where I would start for a natural stone
On this page, of all pages, the question that separates one seller from another is not which of the two products they stock. It is whether they will write down which one they are selling you. Get origin onto the quote in those words, natural or laboratory-grown, before anything else happens, because everything below depends on it. Then work the diamond buying checklist in order: the report number in your hand before payment rather than after, the loose stone priced apart from the setting so you can see which half of the money went where, VAT stated as inside or outside the figure, and a plain answer on buy-back, which you should expect to be discouraging on a lab-grown stone and merely modest on a natural one. Two sellers taken through that same sequence will sort themselves out in front of you, and you will never have needed to weigh up whose name is above the door.
On finding those sellers, skip the obvious search. Looking for a diamond wholesaler or a dealer returns almost nothing worth having in South Africa, and hardly anyone searches those words in the first place. Search the price question instead, what a carat costs, and see who answers with a published rand figure rather than a form. That works as a filter for both halves of this comparison: a seller who will quote a natural stone per carat will usually quote a lab one per carat too, and comparing two per-carat numbers is the only way to see the gap on this page in your own currency.

How to protect yourself before paying
Use this exact sequence whether you land on natural or lab-grown:
- Ask the seller to state natural or laboratory-grown in writing on the quote.
- For any stone above R30,000, ask for the GIA report number before payment. Lab-grown should carry a GIA or IGI report that clearly says laboratory-grown.
- Verify the report at gia.edu/report-check.
- Check carat, colour, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and the laser inscription, and make sure the spec matches what you were quoted.

- Ask whether the stone is held in stock or sourced on demand, and whether you can inspect it before paying.
- Ask whether there is any buy-back, trade-in, or upgrade policy. For lab-grown, expect the honest answer to be very little.
- Reject investment language on either type. A diamond is jewellery first.
