Bottom line up front

A well-proportioned 1.00 carat round brilliant measures about 6.5 mm across the top. A 0.50 ct is about 5.2 mm, a 1.50 ct about 7.4 mm and a 2.00 ct about 8.2 mm. Chart below.

The more useful answer is the one nobody puts on a price tag. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. One carat is 200 milligrams, and where the cutter puts that weight decides how big the stone looks. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can differ visibly on the same hand, and can differ several times over in price on colour, clarity and cut. So stop shopping by the carat number. Shop by spec plus millimetre spread, the only pair of figures that describes what you will see and what you should pay.

Which points at one kind of seller: a manufacturer, cutting house or dealer.

  • They will let you measure. Millimetre spread is not something you can read off a price tag, so you want somebody who will set two stones of the same weight beside each other under one lamp and let you watch one of them cover more finger than the other.
  • One step up costs less. A retailer buys its stones at that same level and then applies keystone, roughly doubling the price, about three times at a branded name, against 3 to 5 percent a hop inside the trade.
  • The ring is made and kept there too. The specification worth measuring is about five times more common up the chain, 52 percent of trade-access stock against 9 percent of retail-held, and the setting, resizing, re-tipping and insurance valuations are bench work. Most dealers and manufacturers run a bench or work with one, which is where a counter sends the same jobs.

Use a showroom if the ring is needed by a date, if seeing a spread of finished pieces on the actual hand and leaving with one is how the decision gets made, or if the brand matters to whoever will wear it.

Diamond carat size chart: weight to millimetre spread

These are typical diameters for a well-proportioned round brilliant. Actual spread varies with cut, and the millimetre measurement on a GIA report is always the figure to trust over any chart.

The diameters are the standard published reference figures for a well-cut round brilliant. The third column is calculated from them, not separately measured. Doubling the weight from 1.00 ct to 2.00 ct buys about 59 percent more visible surface, not double. Weight grows with volume, and you only look at the top.

Why the same carat can look smaller

Depth percentage and table size decide how much of the weight you can see. A stone cut deep holds a fat belly of weight below the girdle where nobody will ever see it. It hits a true 1.00 ct on the scale yet can measure under 6.4 mm face-up, so you paid a one carat price for something that reads closer to a 0.90.

Cutting shallow does the opposite. The stone spreads wider than its weight suggests, which sounds like a bargain. It is not. Light entering the crown escapes through the pavilion instead of returning to your eye, so a shallow stone goes flat or shows a dark centre. Bigger and duller.

Shape changes apparent size at identical weight

Weight distribution is not only vertical. Elongated shapes carry weight along their length, so they cover more finger than a round of the same weight.

  • Marquise reads largest face-up for its weight, by a clear margin.
  • Oval and pear read noticeably larger than a round of identical weight.
  • Round brilliant and princess sit in the middle, the reference everything else is judged against.
  • Deep cushion and some old-style cuts hold the most weight below the girdle and read smallest.

None of this is free. Elongated shapes can show a bow-tie, a dark bar across the waist that no report grades. GIA assigns no cut grade to fancy shapes at all, so with an oval or a marquise you rely on your own eye, and on someone willing to put the stone in front of you.

The magic-size step

Diamond prices do not climb smoothly with weight. They step at the round numbers people ask for: 0.50, 0.70, 0.90, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 carat. Demand concentrates there, and cutters lose real money taking a 1.02 down to a 0.98, so the market pays a premium to be just over the line.

Look at the chart again. A 0.90 ct round is about 6.2 mm against about 6.5 mm for a 1.00 ct: roughly 0.3 mm across the top, and about 91 percent of the face-up area. Nobody will spot that on a hand, and nobody will weigh it. Sitting just under a magic size is one of the few savings in this market that costs you nothing you can see. Finger size, and the size illusion

Apparent size is relative to what surrounds it. The same 6.5 mm stone covers a greater proportion of a narrow finger and reads bigger. On a wider finger it reads smaller, and an elongated shape usually looks better proportioned than chasing more weight. Band width works the same way: a thin band flatters the stone, a heavy one competes with it. Before buying weight you do not need, check the finger measurement against the ring size chart.

Where size gets confused with quality

Public South African listings advertise a “1 carat diamond ring” at well under R20,000. Those listings are real, and they are almost never a 1.00 ct certified solitaire. It is typically a total-carat-weight cluster, many small stones adding up to a carat, or a single stone of low colour and clarity. A cluster of chips has no 6.5 mm spread anywhere in it. It is the clearest example of carat weight being sold as size and as quality.

Set that against a figure for a genuine single stone, worked from the published trade list so you can redo it. The Rapaport round list of 20 March 2026 puts a G/VS1 in the 1.00 to 1.49 carat band at $5,400 per carat. Take 10 to 30 percent off list, convert at 16.50 rand to the dollar and add 15 percent VAT, and a loose 1.00 ct at that grade works out at roughly R72,000 to R92,000 including VAT. A one carat ring at a premium South African showroom ran R105,000 to R428,000 in a July 2026 study of 73 rows, 71 of them priced, across 18 sellers, 17 of whom are South African. That second figure is a finished ring with its setting in the price, and it rests on three listings of three different specifications, so treat it as what a counter charges for “a one carat ring” rather than as the same stone measured twice. I publish it as a band rather than as single stones with single prices, because one listing is one business and a band across many of them is a market.

The distance between a sub-R20,000 headline and those bands is almost never a bargain. It is specification, and the size of the gap is measurable. In June 2026 I listed 230 GIA-certified natural stones held by six South African sellers and recorded what each one actually was. About 9 percent of the retail-held stock reached D to G colour with VS2 clarity or better, against 52 percent of the stock held by sellers working with trade access. That is the difference the cheap ticket is really buying: lower colour, lower clarity, often no cut grade, frequently no report from a major laboratory, and often a cluster of small stones rather than one. A price comparison only becomes real once the weight, colour, clarity, cut grade and grading laboratory are held still.

The cheapest headline is the least stone: less spread, less colour, less clarity, often no certificate.

What this means for where you buy

If size is really millimetre spread plus cut, you cannot buy it off a price tag. You need someone who will discuss the specification and show you the actual stone: the report, the measurements line, the stone under a loupe beside another one. In practice that means a dealer or a manufacturer who holds stock, because they can set two stones of the same weight side by side and let you see which one spreads. That takes ninety seconds and is worth more than every chart on this page.

Finding those sellers is a matter of who will state a number in public. Search what a carat costs, along the lines of the diamond price per carat in South Africa, rather than searching for a wholesaler or a dealer. A seller who publishes a per-carat figure has already agreed to be measured against it, and one who will put that figure next to a millimetre measurement is the shortlist worth phoning.

A retail showroom is still a legitimate choice. If you want to try finished pieces on and handle a range of settings, a showroom does that well and a loose-stone dealer does not. Just go in knowing that a counter sells what is in the case, and that the answer to “can I see the measurements and compare this against another stone at the same weight” tells you which kind of seller you are dealing with.

Checks you run yourself

  1. Ask for the measurements line, not the carat. Every GIA report gives the stone’s dimensions in millimetres. Get it before any price talk and compare it to the chart above.
  2. Check spread against weight. A 1.00 ct measuring under about 6.3 mm is cut deep. You are paying for hidden weight, so ask why.
  3. Ask for the depth and table percentages. They are on the report. A seller who cannot find them is not the person to buy a five-figure stone from.
  4. Price just under the magic number. Quote a 0.90 to 0.95 alongside the 1.00 ct and compare spread and price together.
  5. View two stones of the same weight side by side. This teaches you more than any chart, and a seller who cannot do it does not hold stock.
  6. Verify the report yourself at gia.edu/report-check, and check the girdle inscription matches before you pay. The GIA guide explains each line.
  7. Establish what “1 carat” means in the quote. One certified stone, or a total carat weight across several? If it is total carat weight, there is no 6.5 mm anything in the piece.
